Panhellenic Architecture Competition for the redesign of former lignite mining areas in Western Macedonia
It was decided to design a conceptual proposal for the whole area of 188,8 hectares of former coal mining areas in order to develop a master plan which will impress and increase the public visitation and involvement .
A non-negotiable parameter in the design process was to leave untouched the boundaries of the already rehabilitated with trees ‘forest’ areas, as well as the existing Moto Cross track .
The predominant design idea was to create utilitarian modules (functional-thematic spaces) that will operate either independently or in total. These functional spaces will be sited in all the non-tree areas both in the mitigated restored and not disturbed areas. The utilitarian modules are “named” according to their thematic identity.
A small park train is the dominant transport connection among the proposed thematic spaces, apart from cycling, hiking and walking.
